Host Susceptibility Factors Branch Seeks Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA) Fellow
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) seeks applicants for a Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA) position within the Host Susceptibility Factors Branch, Epidemiology and Genetics Research Program (EGRP), Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS).
This fellowship offers a rich learning experience that will afford the successful candidates the opportunity to work with teams of scientists and public health professionals at NCI, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and institutions around the country. The successful candidates will interact with administrators as well as scientists from a variety of research disciplines, including epidemiology, genomics, and public health; and also may have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers active in these arenas, leading to potential publications.
The Host Susceptibility Factors Branch (HSFB) plans, develops, directs, coordinates, and evaluates a comprehensive program of epidemiologic research in cancer etiology focusing on host factors to reduce cancer risk in humans (see http://epi.grants.cancer.gov/hsfb/). The primary focus of the Branch is to support the identification of genomic factors that influence cancer risk. The Branch is further interested in how host factors interact with the environment to influence cancer risk, as well as how such factors might contribute to cancer health disparities. The HSFB CRTA will work closely with Branch staff to support current Branch initiatives and activities (for example, DCCPS Biospecimen and International Research Coordination), as well as help develop, coordinate, and administer future efforts in emerging areas of scientific focus for the Branch.
NCI is the primary federal agency responsible for cancer research and is part of NIH,
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). EGRP manages a comprehensive program of grant-supported, population-based research on the determinants of cancer and supports 500 research grants. Its offices are located in Rockville, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC.
Position Description: The successful candidate will help coordinate and manage highly visible projects, including Program-level activities for existing trans-NIH research initiatives. The incumbent also will assist with the coordination and development of future funding opportunities for the extramural research community. Duties will include organizing meetings, workshops, and teleconferences; preparing briefing materials, reports, and meeting summaries; performing literature searches, summarizing research findings, and analyzing grant portfolios; and developing or updating content for relevant Websites. Additional duties will include attending relevant seminars and conferences. In accomplishing these activities, the successful candidate will meet frequently and work closely with EGRP staff.
Qualifications:
- A master’s-level degree in epidemiology, public health or a related discipline.
- A strong interest in population-based research, and cancer control.
- Experience with scientific literature and databases.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, planning, writing, and project management skills.
- The ability to work independently and on teams.
- Attention to detail and data management skills and/or experience with spreadsheets.

Stipend and Benefits:
The CRTA position is a one-year award with EGRP, with the option to renew for an additional year. Salary is commensurate with experience and education. The salary starts at approximately $33,900 for a trainee with a relevant master’s degree, and could vary depending on years of relevant post master’s degree experience.
